Search Friendly Domain Names

Your domain name, which is also called the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of your site, serves as an arrow that points web surfers towards your site. In terms of search engine optimization, your URL makes it easier for Google, Yahoo, or whatever to find your site, and present it to web searchers who are looking for something relevant to what you have to offer.
Of course, before you can post your site under a specific URL, you need to register it to a web host. A web host provides you with the space on the World Wide Web to post and make your website accessible to the public. Before you can register that URL to a web host, you must know what qualities make for a search engine friendly domain name.

Before you register your domain name, be sure you choose it wisely. Use TLD’s or Top Level Domains, which are more easily found by search engines. Examples are .com, .edu, .net, .asia and .org.

Sources say that country-specific domain names such as .my (Malaysia), .sg (Singapore), .ph (Philippines) for example, have the tendency to be filtered out, especially if the search engine uses indexes that are specific to regions.

If your website is about selling baby shoes online, be sure you choose a domain name that mentions important keywords, such as your product. As an example, a domain named www.baby-shoes-online.com, is better than www.online-baby-shoes.com.
You can also use hyphens (-) to separate the keywords in your domain name. Avoid using more than three keywords in registering a domain name. Experts also suggest adding helpful terms to the name like “best”, “online”, “top”, and others.
